Put the ME in Merry Christmas
The Christmas holidays can be a wonderful time of year. The weather warms up, you might enjoy a break from work or study and there’s extra time to spend with family and friends.
There is certainly some extra magic in the air.... but Christmas can also be a stressful time for many. Why? Well, when you look beyond the tinsel and twinkling lights, the holiday season can bring some challenges. There is the damage it can do to our bank accounts for a start – and let’s not forget the pressure we might put on ourselves to make the day memorable... or EEEKK even perfect!
So what can we do to make the holidays both fun, while look after our wellbeing? The EYDN team recommends – putting the ME in Merry Christmas this December! Check out our top tips for self care during this busy but wonderful time:
Kick off the Christmas season by scheduling some ME time and watching your favourite Christmas movie. Just add a hot chocolate, and your most comfy pyjamas!
Say no to events if you don’t feel up to it. By setting some boundaries you can protect your energy and stay MERRY for the events you do attend.
Enjoy delicious foods in moderation. At this time of year our Christmas cupboards are bulging with temptation. Try balancing out all those tasty treats with your normal routine. This could include some exercise and a healthy breakfast for example.
Watch your Christmas spending. Ahhhh this is a tough one... we all love spoiling our loved ones but it’s important to remember the best present you can give is your time and attention – as corny as that may sound! Homemade gifts, secret Santa and less extravagant presents are a great idea too if you’re trying to rein in the spending.
Reach out if you need. Christmas can be an emotional time. We might miss loved ones or reflect on the year that was – and after yet another year spent in strange circumstances it’s quite understandable if you end up feeling a little blue!
To manage these feelings you can:
- Remember loved ones that aren’t around in a way that feels good
- Speak to a friend when you feel sad or lonely
- Seek professional help if you need - you can contact beyond blue on 1300 224
636 or chat via their website at www.beyondblue.org.au/
Accept help if you need it. Santa Claus gets a lot of credit. Yes, he’s a hard-working man, but what we forget is he has a team of elves working behind the scenes! Let’s not deprive ourselves of the same! Rather than taking on everything alone, ask your friends and family to help you over the festive season. For example, when someone asks, “can I help you wrap some presents?” Live a little and actually let them!
What do you think? Will you use these tips and join the EYDN team in becoming our best ELVES this Christmas? I think if we all give ourselves some TLC (that’s tender, loving, Christmas-care) we’ll be well on our way to putting a little ME in Merry Christmas!
The EYDN team would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a bright new year! We look forward to a great 2022 with you all.
